RMT vs. Spa Massage: What's the Difference (and Why It Matters for Your Health Benefits)

Marcus WebbFebruary 20, 20255 min read

If you're using extended health benefits for massage, this is one of the most important things to understand about your coverage.

What is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)? In Ontario, an RMT has completed a minimum 2,200-hour diploma program (most complete 3,000 hours), passed provincial examinations, and is regulated by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). This is a regulated health profession.

What makes RMT treatment different? - RMTs conduct a health intake and assessment before treatment - Treatment is tailored to specific conditions and goals - RMTs can provide receipts accepted by OHIP-adjacent benefit plans - Insurance direct billing is available

The coverage question Most group benefit plans (Manulife, Sun Life, Green Shield, etc.) only reimburse services from a CMTO-registered RMT. A spa massage receipt from an unregistered practitioner will typically be denied.

At Peaks, both of our RMTs are CMTO members and offer direct billing to most major insurers — meaning you pay little to nothing out of pocket for your treatment.

When to choose an RMT - Post-injury soft tissue work - Tension headaches - Chronic neck/shoulder tightness - Pre- or post-surgical massage - Prenatal massage

If you're unsure whether your benefits cover our services, call our front desk and we'll verify on your behalf before your first appointment.
